Cypress Island Preserve's swamp is filled with old-growth live oak ridges and extensive tracts of bottomland hardwood forest. It is home to a spectacular rookery of herons, egrets and ibis that supports 20,000 or more nesting birds each year, making it one of the largest water bird nesting colonies in North America.
